Born in Patricroft, England 26 April 1877. Designed his
first aircraft in 1907, and self taught, became one of
the first in Great Britain to fly powered aircraft.
Incorporated the A. V. Roe (AVRO) Company to manufacture
aircraft in 1910, becoming the dominant producer of
British aircraft in the 1914-18 war -- the most famous of
which was the AVRO 504 training plane. Among his early
innovations were the first enclosed cabin aircraft, first
British seaplane, combining dual controls into a single
column. Knighted in 1929 for his distinguished contributions
to air power and service to aviation. The company he formed
continues today under British Aerospace Corporation.
