Born in Hungary, 1881, one of the world's first and
certainly the most honored aeronautical scientist. His
professorship at Aachen Aeronautical Institute of
Gottingen University during the second and third decades
of the century marked him the leading theorist in the field
of flight dynamics. Director, Guggenheim Aeronautics
Laboratory, and Founder of Jet Propulsion Laboratory,
California Institute of Technology, and the Aerojet
Corporation. His classes became the mecca for graduate
students from all the world. First recipient of the U.S.
Medal of Science.
His theoretical works are the key which have unlocked the
doors to supersonic flight, hypersonic wind tunnels, rocketry
and aircraft propulsion. No phase of contemporary aeronautic
and space endeavor is without his genius. Died 1963.
