Frederick Handley Page was born at Cheltenham, England,
November 15th, 1885. In 1909, at age twenty-four, he
founded Handley Page, Limited. His design brilliance
was first manifested in the 0/400 and V/1500 World War I
bombers, the latter of which carried the astonishing bomb
load of six and one-half tons and had the endurance for
twelve hours.
Recognizing the significance of long-range air transport,
Handley Page founded Handley Page Transport, Limited in
1919 and opened routes to Paris and Amsterdam.
In World War II Handley Page Hampden and Halifax bombers
played major roles in the Allied victory. After the war,
his Victor four-jet bomber was at the forefront as England
moved into the nuclear delivery role.
Sixty-three aircraft have borne the name Handley Page. These,
along with his many technical innovations such as the slotted
wing, contributed immeasurably to the rapid development of the
British aerospace industry prior to his death in 1963.
Sir Frederick is also recognized as an educator who advocated
strongly the value of sound technical training as the foundation
for industrial success.
