Born Kleinburg, Germany, May 2, 1892. Commissioned a
cavalry officer in 1911. Aerial observer 1915. Military
aviator 1916.
From the beginning of his flying career demonstrated
extraordinary skills as a fighter pilot. His leadership
qualities of dedication, discipline, and personal involvement,
developed the famed Jasta II into the most formidable air
unit on the Western Front. His record of 80 confirmed
victories was unsurpassed in the 1914-1918 war.
The most esteemed of German heroes, holder of the Pour Le
Merite. Died in combat 21 April 1918.
