Born Gladwyne, PA, June 25, 1886. Graduated U.S. Military
Academy 1907. Taught to fly by the Wrights July 1911. Staunch
supporter of Mitchell's belief in the strategic capability of
the airplane. Chief of the Army Air Corps in 1938-1946. His
foresight and leadership of the USAF before and during WW II
were vital to Allied victory.
General Arnold won the first Mackay Trophy awarded in 1912, and
again in 1934. His honors include the DSM and DFC. Appointed
as a 5 star general May, 1949. Died January 15, 1950.
