The SR-71 was a long-range, advanced strategic reconnaissance
aircraft. The Blackbird flew many missions from Kadena Air
Base, Okinawa, where it earned the nickname of Habu after a
deadly native snake. No SR-71 was shot down or hit by enemy
fire.
In flight, the Blackbird generated heat of over 1,000 degrees
F and up to 200 degrees in the cockpit. Crews wore special
space suits. Throughout its 24-year career (1973-97), the
SR-71 remained the world's fastest and highest-flying
aircraft, setting two world records: speed of 2,193 MPH and
altitude over 85,000 feet. Once it flew from London to Los
Angeles, 5,645 miles, in 3 hours and 47 minutes.
