The Albatross served in the U.S. Air Force, Navy, Coast Guard and foreign air forces. The Albatross could rescue downed pilots and assist in other maritime emergencies. The HU-16 played an important role in Korea and Vietnam by rescuing hundreds of downed airmen. The HU-16 performed ice flow surveillance in the North Atlantic, anti-smuggling/customs patrols in the Pacific, long-range over-water SAR missions and maritime surveillance. Some had skids for snow landings. With the assistance of JATO bottles, the Albatross could take-off in 900 feet. The last HU-16 flew in 1983. This aircraft spent time in Pensacola, Corpus Cristi, Elizabeth City and Cape Cod. In 1981 she retired.
1293 served the U.S. Coast Guard from 1954-1981
