This aircraft was originally built as a "D" model in 1952. The "D" model Sabre was the first aircraft to employ radar in head on targeting, carry all rocket armament, carry one pilot for flying and radar control, and have electronic engine fuel control. In 1956, 981 "D" model F-86's were converted to the "L" model. The wings were extended two feet and a larger engine with afterburning was added. It also incorporated a drag chute for landing. This aircraft was delivered to the Air Force in Dec 1952. In 1957 it was from a "D" model to "L" model and assigned to Moody AFB, Ga. In 1960 it was assigned to Norton AFB and later retired in Dec 1960. In 1996 a group of volunteers led by Mike Alex and Jim Meek recovered this aircraft from a playgound in Victorville, California where it suffered many years of neglect. After years of hard work its restoration was completed in 2003.
