Designed in 1958 the F-4 was the most versatile multirole
fighter of the Cold War. Powerful and tenacious the F-4
could fly twice the speed of sound and carry a greater
bomb load than a B-29 bomber. The F-4 was used by the
Navy, Air Force, and Marines. The Phantom was used
extensively in the Vietnam War, 141 of the total of 197
air victories were scored by the Phantom. In 1967 this
aircraft was assigned to the 497th TFS, 8th TFW at Ubon
RTAFB Thailand, and then transferred to the 366th TFW
DaNang. It was sent to the U.S. for repair and continued
to fly in the Air Force until 1987 and retired from the
163rd TFG March AFB as a combat veteran with 5,123 flight
hours.
