The A-9 was Northrop's candidate in the Air Force's
competition amoung manufacturers in the 1970s for
ground attack aircraft. It was designed to be
extremely durable and rugged since most of its flight
time was to support ground troops through the delivery of
bombs, missles and machine gun fire close to the ground.
The 12 underwing pylons could carry almost all weapons in
Air force Inventory.
A-9 was not chosen by the Air Force for production. Instead,
it chose the A-10 Warthog which gained fame in the Persian
Gulf War as a tank killer.
This aircraft is one of only two A-9As that exist.
