A total of five Sea Darts were built in San Diego, California by Convair
for the U.S. Navy, but only three were ever flown. The first successful
flight took place on San Diego Bay April 9, 1953. The final open-sea
test occured January 16, 1956. Shortly thereafter the Sea Dart test
program was discontinued. Nevertheless, the program proved the feasibility
of supersonic water-based aircraft.
This exhibit is dedicated to the outstanding men and women of the aerospace
industry whose ability and vision enabled this great nation to reach for the
moon and beyond.
