Experts agree that the two airplanes were so evenly matched that the outcome in combat depended upon the skill of the pilots. This was because each was superior under different conditions. The MiG was faster than the early Sabres high up and slower low down. Their speed was equal at 30,000 feet. The MiG could fly higher while the Sabre could dive faster. At war's end, the F-86F's speed was improved to equal or better than that of the MiG-15 at all of its operational altitudes, but the MiG could still fly higher. One negative characteristic of the MiG was its tendency to go into an unrecoverable spin unless skillfully flown. The Sabre had no flight difficulties. It should be noted that both fighters were subsonic.

The colored photo depicts and F-86 victory over a MiG-15 in Chinese markings. This was the world's first encounter between swept wing jet fighters. The event occurred on December 17, 1950. Original art by Keith Ferris.
