Born in Massone D'Arco, Italy July 3, 1886, Gianni
Caproni was schooled in engineering in Germany and
France.
In 1910, he designed and built his first airplane, a
single engine biplane, the CA-1. In 1911 he established
the Caproni Company and Flight School, which was to build
180 types of aircraft over the next half century.
During the 1914-1918 war, Caproni designed heavy bombers
which played a major role in the Allied strategic bombing
campaign. The CA-33 bomber design was mass produced in
England, France, and the United States as well as Italy.
Post war, Caproni converted his famous bombers to passenger
and cargo aircraft. Among these were the 60 passenger CA-60
transport and the six-engined, 6000 HP, CA-90 biplane. During
World War II he headed all aircraft production in Italy. He
died October 1957.
