Born October 5, 1882, Worcester, Massachusetts. After
15 years of painstaking research he launched the world's
first liquid-fueled rocket on March 16, 1926. It flew
184 feet in 2 1/2 seconds, or about 70 miles an hour.
Three years later, in 1929, he successfully launched a
rocket that carried a payload of camera and a barometer.
In 1935 he fired the first gyroscopically controlled
rocket to an altitude of 4,800 feet at 550 miles an hour.
His monumental research into rocket flight provided the
guidance and inspiration which led to man's successful
exploration of space. Honored by the world as the
inventor of modern rocketry. Died 1945.
