Born Kiev, Russia, May 25, 1889. Designed and flew
his first aircraft in 1910 to begin the longest continuous
aeronautical career in history -- more than 60 years.
Among his achievements, from the world's first four-engine
aeroplane of 1913, to his epic making flying boats of the
1930-40 period, his greatest contribution is the rotary
wing aircraft -- the helicopter. His first models built
in 1909 failed for want of engines with sufficient power,
but he nurtured his dream, and on September 14, 1939, made
the first successful flight. No single advancement of
aeronautical science has had greater impact on the life and
well being of man than this invention. Died 26 October 1972.
