HERMANN OBERTH
Pioneer of Rocketry and Astronautics
Born in Hermannstadt, Transylvania 25 June 1894. Doctoral Degree in Rocket Development, Heidelberg University 1914. As with his rocket weapon system proposed in 1917, his 1923 book "The Rocket into Planetary Space" which accurately recognized the major problems of rocketry and space flight -- and their solution -- was considered ultra visionary. Devoted subsequent years to research and teaching, becoming the leading theoretician to German rocket scientists of the 1930s and 40s. Emigrated to the United States in 1945, participating in the Ballistic Missile and Space Programs. Returned to Germany to teach and continue his research.
Elected to the International Aerospace Hall of Fame
