Born Wheeling, West Virginia, 8 May 1895. Combat pilot
WW I. Entered the fledgling aero industry with the
Martin Company 1918. Douglas Aircraft 1925, helped
design the DC-3. Assumed leadership of North American
Aviation in 1934. With foresight prepared this company
to assume its major role in providing the trainers,
fighters and bombers which assured victorius allied
airpower in WW II. In post war years guided his company
into jet aircraft, nuclear power, rocket engines, supersonic
aircraft. Produced more planes in his 46 year career in
aero industry than any other man. Died 27 July 1962.
