Born 24 December 1910, Wellington, N. Z. The knowledge
of man has in only two decades made a quantum advance
in space science and exploration. William Pickering has
been in the forefront of this exploration.
An early space scientist/engineer, he invented the electronic
telemetering techniques which became the norm for the
transmission of data from space.
Appointed Director of the prestigious Jet Propulsion
Laboratory in 1954, placing in his hands the full responsibility
for the unmanned exploration of the Moon and the Planets. Man's
Odyssey into space -- the Viking craft to Mars -- the Voyagers
to Jupiter and Saturn -- had their genesis under his leadership.
