Born March 24, 1917, Berlin, Germany. His decision to
become a student of space endeavor was so advanced in
terms of the sciences available at the time, he was
forced to literally invent his own education. M.S.
degree in aeronautical engineering Technical University
of Berlin, 1942. Member of the famed Peenemuende team,
he played a dominant role in the development of the
German V-2 rocket. Emigrating to the United States he
began an ever ascending and brilliant career in the space
endeavors of this country, including the Atlas booster
and as project director of the Centaur stage. As advisor
to NASA, industry, and Department of Defense, his influence
has been felt in all U.S. space programs. Exponent of man's
future use of space for his well being and survival.
