Doctor of Science, Massachusetts Institute of Technology 1963.
Air Force test pilot and combat veteran of the Korean war with
two victories.
On the Gemini XII flight in 1966 established a new record for
extravehicular activity, spending 5 1/2 hours outside the
spacecraft. Performed the first space rendezvous using on-board
computations and made the first fully automatic reentry of a
spacecraft.
As pilot of the "Eagle" on the Apollo XI mission, placed the
spacecraft safely and precisely on the surface of the moon, and
back into space for docking with the "Columbia" for the return
flight to earth, assuring the success of this historic flight.
