Born Atchison, Kansas, 24 July 1898. Earned her wings in 1925. Her life was totally dedicated to the advancement of aviation. In 1929 set a women's speed record of 181.18 MPH and became the first woman to fly the Atlantic. Her solo flights of the Atlantic in 1932, and the Pacific from Hawaii to California, were typical demonstrations of her high courage, dedication, and pioneering spirit.

On an equator flight around the world in July 1937 her aircraft disappeared over the Pacific.

Elected to the International Aerospace Hall of Fame 1967
