Born Berkeley, California, October 2, 1921. Entered the
U.S. Navy 1942, serving as a fighter pilot. In 1950 after
2500 hours of flying time in piston aircraft, he became an
aeronautical research pilot, flying advanced prototype
rocket aircraft for NASA including the famed multisonic
X-15.
First pilot to fly at twice the speed of sound (1,327 MPH),
1953.
Brilliant engineer and a skilled pilot, his work contributed
most significantly to the advancement of the aerospace sciences
of the United States during the 1950-60 period.
