Born San Diego, California, 15 October 1887. Rated Military Aviator 1917. Only pilot in history to receive the MacKay Trophy three times for outstanding achievements in aviation.

Established world altitude record of 40,800 feet in 1921, world endurance record of 35 hours, 18 minutes, in 1922. A pilot of U.S. Air Service Fokker T-2 on first nonstop transcontinental flight, 1923. First to dust crops from the air. First to fly pressurized aircraft. Played a major role in development of high altitude flight physiology, turbo super chargers, aerial photography and parachutes.
Elected to the International Aerospace Hall of Fame 1976
