Born Winchester, Virginia, October 23, 1888. Graduated
United States Naval Academy 1912. Naval aviator 1918.
His career as Polar explorer spanned more than 20 years.
On May 9, 1926, he commanded the first flight of man over
the North Pole. June 1927 saw him make the first west-east
transatlantic flight in a multi-engine aircraft with payload.
His greatest explorations and triumphs came in Antarctica
commencing in 1928 with the establishment of the permanent
scientific base, Little America. His flight over the South
Pole on November 29 was another historic first. Under
sponsorship of the National Geographic Society and the U.S.
Navy he led five major expeditions to the southern continent.
History will record his crowning achievement as the development
of the Antarctic Treaty, the world's first true instrument of
international cooperation and peace. Died 1957.
