Legendary fighter pilot -- Proponent of Air Power as a national instrument.

Born Ontario, Canada, 1894. Joined the Royal Flying Corps 1915. In some 170 air battles he achieved 72 victories in the skies over France and Germany to become the ace of aces of the Allied Air Forces. Fearless, aggressive, dedicated, and modest in triumph, he epitomized the fighter pilot. His example of constant practice gunnery and tactics served as the model for professional fighter pilots of succeeding generations. The only man in the history of the British Empire to receive the Victoria Cross, Distinguished Service Order, and Military Cross in a single ceremony.

Recalled to active duty in 1939 to serve his country in World War II, achieving the rank of Air Marshal, the first Canadian so honored. Died 1956.

Elected to the International Aerospace Hall of Fame 1967
