Born in Brooklyn, N.Y. April 6, 1892. Began his aviation
career as engineer for Glen L. Martin Company. Established
Douglas Aircraft Company, 1920. Designed and built first
airplane to circumnavigate the earth, followed by a
continuing line of civil and military aircraft to this day
... Including the legendary DC-3, the C-47 of World War II
fame of which 10,926 were delivered. From his inspired
genius have come the great civil transports, the DC-4,
DC-6, DC-7 and the DC-8, 9 and 10 jets which have made
air travel a vital part of society.
