Born Scarborough, England, 27 December, 1773. His meticulous observations
and findings were to guide later pioneers and confirm his right to be
called the inventor of flight.
Deduced that machines would fly if wings were cambered. Began actual
gliding experiments in 1808 with his first manned glider flight in 1853.
His sophisticated machine had provisions for pilot operated three axis
controls and undercarriage wheels. Prophet of technology yet unborn,
pioneered the development of combustion engines, spoked wheels, finned
missles, propellers, streamline shapes. Died 15 December 1857.
