ROLES:  Originally designed as a carrier-based fair-weather fighter bomber for the US Navy; later developed into a carrier- and land-based all-weather multi-mission aircraft for the US Navy/Marines and US Air Force, capable of fleet defense, close air support, air superiority, long-range strike, tactical reconnaissance, air defense suppression (Wild Weasel), and continental air defense
